I hadn’t noticed that either, and I was working then. The bottom line is that people are being replaced by automation, to the delight of owners. Think of the self-checkout lines in retail, and self-driving trucks in the fairly near future. Human workers are being rendered obsolete.
It’s my understanding that society needs a balance to survive, could the automated production type cause an imbalance ? I figure if the amount of goods produced by the robots aren’t able to be sold due to @ reduced internal market ( unemployed people not having a decent salary ) what are the corporations going to do with them, stick ’em in their nose ?? Just a thought…
That’s a good thought, and it’s one of the most important reasons I expect the economy to decline unless either jobs are created or a national income is instituted. Unfortunately, the short sighted among the “owner” class will resist any taxation to accomplish those changes. They operate on a “logic” that expects “markets” (corporate self-interest) to magically correct any problems caused by the markets.
Jobs are been created, but it looks like the ‘ millennium generation’ is ill-prepared to perform them,with few exceptions the bulk of our younGen seem pretty relaxed upon the idea of heading to the 9-5 deal; it’s ok, they’ll live with mommy & daddy, have food in their belly, a roof over their heads…LIFE IS GOOD, NO RESPONSIBILITIES !!!
If you study the article and its sources, the jobs that are being created are typically temporary/contract, part time, or minimum wage jobs. Most of the minimum wage workers can and will be replaced by machines. That “skill gap” is not what it has been made out to be, which is the point of the article from the headline to the last line.
